The objective of this research is to develop a prototype Web-based GIS and statistical application for analysis, modelling and visualisation of socio-spatial datasets. The datasets include variables derived from 2006 Census data and voting results of the 2007 Australian federal election at the polling booth level. The Web-based GIS can generate maps displaying patterns of voting for political parties across polling booths with overlay data showing the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of populations within the surrounding polling booth catchments. Equal interval, quantile, median-based natural breaks or location quotient classification can be used to generate different map displays. Statistical functionalities such as regression analysis, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis enable researchers to conduct on-line statistical modelling and the visualisation of outputs. The prototype Web-based application has been developed as an information dissemination and analysis tool not only to give researchers on-line access to socio-spatial datasets and metadata, but also to enhance the capacity and capability of socio-spatial scientists in Australia’s universities to undertake spatially integrated social science (SISS) research.

To access the Web GIS and Statistical Analysis you must have the Java plug-in (a Java Runtime Environment - JRE) installed on your computer and your browser must be configured to enable Java applets.
